FieldTrip is the MATLAB software toolbox for MEG, EEG and iEEG analysis, which is released free of charge as open source software under the GNU general public license. FieldTrip is developed by members and collaborators of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour at Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

In a few days, and after an absence of 2 years, we will again host our Donders advanced MEG/EEG-toolkit on-site. We are excited to finally be able to teach in real life again. With the help of our youngest future colleague all workshop PCs have been prepared and tested.

In the past we used an FTP server to distribute files, but as of April 2022 we switched to a new download server that can be found on https://download.fieldtriptoolbox.org. It supports WebDAV, which means that you can download individual files using your web browser. You can also download a complete directory (with subdirectories) at once using a specialized WebDAV client such as CyberDuck or FileZilla. On Windows and macOS you can even mount the WebDAV server as a “network file system” and treat it as a network drive.

From May 9-13 we will host the MEG/EEG FieldTrip data analysis toolkit at the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging in Nijmegen. The toolkit course is aimed at PhD and postdoctoral researchers that already have some experience with EEG and/or MEG data acquisition (either a pilot or a full study) and that have a good understanding of their own experimental design. Furthermore, we expect that you know the basics of MATLAB and that you already have some experience with MEG/EEG preprocessing and analysis. We will teach you advanced data analysis methods and cover preprocessing, frequency analysis, source reconstruction, connectivity and various statistical methods. Furthermore, we will give attention to good practices for reproducible research, Open Data and Open Science.

We hope and expect that we will be able to teach this toolkit on site.

For a long time we used Google Analytics to collect website usage statistics. This allowed us to see how many visitors we have, which is important to convince funding agencies and directors of FieldTrip’s impact, and which pages were the most visited, which helps to guide our efforts in improving documentation.

In the summer of 2020 we introduced a “cookie banner” with the opportunity to disable third-party cookies. The number of unique visitors that was counted subsequently dropped 85%, from approximately 3500 to 500 per week (with a short glitch in 2021 due to a bug). This indicates that you don’t like cookies; which we understand.

For website usage statistics we have now implemented Plausible, an open source web analytics solution without tracking cookies that is fully compliant with GDPR, CCPA and PECR. It only stores that you have visited, not who you are, and it does not share any information across websites to build user profiles. Plausible allows us to get the minimal information that we need, but none of your personal information.

Furthermore, we have updated the search functionality. If you are fine with third-party cookies, it will continue to use Google Search. If you reject third-party cookies, it will now use DuckDuckGo, which does not track you.

Recently we have had some issues with the automatic updating of the website, most notably resulting in the download form being broken. It is now hopefully solved with this fix.

The example page on determining the number of subjects to obtain a certain statistical power when using cluster-based permutation tests has been updated by Dr. Cheng Wang with an explanation how to use it for 2Ă—N interaction effects.

This week CuttingEEG2021 is taking place as a (in part) real life event, in Aix-en-Provence. Robert and Jan-Mathijs presented a hands-on training to spectrally analyse EEG data on short and long time scales. To this end, we created a brand new tutorial that also highlights the relatively new feature to represent trls and trialinfo fields as tables. The latter feature relies on data being represented in the BIDS-format. Feel free to check out this new tutorial about time-frequency analysis on short and long timescales.
